01 Make It a System, Not a Sacrifice

If you're the one who always ends up driving, something's broken in how your group decides — and it's probably not that everyone else is selfish. It's that no one ever set a rotation. The person who least minds driving keeps quietly volunteering, and everyone else keeps quietly letting them. That's not fairness; it's a habit nobody noticed forming.

The fix is embarrassingly simple: name it. In the group chat before the next night out, say something like "I've had the wheel the last few times — whose turn this weekend?" That one message shifts the dynamic from passive assumption to active negotiation. Deciding before the first drink is when this conversation is easiest — and it gives whoever is driving the whole night time to adjust their own plans.

02 The Perks Are Real — Claim Them

Being the driver comes with genuine upsides that are easy to forget when you're watching everyone else unwind. Gas costs and parking get covered by the group — make that the norm, not a favor you have to ask for. Your entry fee, your first round of soft drinks, whatever the group is spending: that's yours too. Some friend-groups do a straight cash handover at the end of the night; others just quietly pick up the driver's tab all evening. Either works. The point is that driving is a contribution, not a charity, and it deserves a return.

Beyond the money, there's something oddly satisfying about a clear head at 2 a.m. You remember the funny thing that happened. You know who had too much and you handled it, which means something. That's not nothing.

03 Say It Out Loud, Once

You don't have to make a speech. You just have to say, once and plainly, "I'd love to actually drink at one of these soon — can we work out a proper rotation?" Anyone worth a spot in your group chat will immediately agree, feel a little embarrassed they hadn't noticed, and step up. The ones who push back are telling you something useful about themselves.

A good crew shares the driving the same way they share the bill. If yours isn't doing that yet, you just have to be the one to name it.
