Working with the Community

Impaired driving doesn't just affect your campus. It is a problem throughout the community surrounding your campus. The only way to solve this problem is to join forces with those in the community who are also working to save lives and prevent injuries. How do you find these people? Begin by checking with your city or county law enforcement agency or health department to find out if an impaired driving/traffic safety coalition already exists. If a coalition already exists, join it and invite the members to help with your campus efforts. Coalition members can help with awareness activities and completing the Campus Impaired Driving Environmental Scan. You can provide student volunteers for their community-wide campaigns. If a coalition doesn't exist, check out the helpful information about starting an impaired driving prevention task force in the Policy section of this website.

Don't forget to check out what local high schools are doing to address impaired driving. Many BACCHUS groups team up with high school peer educators to provide education to high school students about preventing impaired driving, especially around prom and graduation time. High schools really appreciate the extra help and it's a great way to recruit future peer educators.
