Creating a Safe Ride Program
Safe ride programs are becoming common among college
communities nationwide to help combat the tragedies associated with
drunken driving. These programs encourage college students to make
educated and responsible decisions regarding their actions before
and after drinking alcoholic beverages.
In addition to preventing students from driving under
the influence, programs increase safety by offering an alternative
to sober students who would otherwise be faced with the decision
to walk alone at night, ride with an intoxicated friend who refuses
to hand over the keys, r ride with a stranger.
Ride services provide many benefits to the communities
where they are located. They help avoid injuries and property damage
(reducing the cost of private insurance and health care to the community,
free law enforcement to address other threats to the community's
well being, and relieve over burdened court and prison systems.
