While alcohol and marijuana might receive the most attention when it comes to impaired driving, it's important not to forget that there are many other ways that drivers can be impaired. For instance, you know you're not as alert as you should be when you're on your cell phone, right? Or that you shouldn't really drive home from your friend's house when you're exhausted after being out until 3 a.m.?

Fatalities caused by reckless/impaired driving are often deaths that occur because a driver decides his/her time or fun is more important than the safety of themselves and those around them. Unfortunately, there is little we can do to influence the actions of others once they are behind the wheel. We can only hope that the continuous educational efforts to reduce reckless behavior concerning motor vehicle travel weighs heavily in the consciousness of drivers at every start, stop and turn. (Like saving the phone calls for later!)

But alcohol is not the only factor that influences how motorists drive.  Technology, drugs, speeding, lack of sleep, and overall carelessness contribute to impaired driving and the accidents associated with impaired driving.
