Drowsy Driving
- Sleepy drivers cause approximately 100,000 crashes
every year in the United States. 1
- Sleepy drivers cause more than 1,500 fatalities
and 71,000 injuries every year. 1
- Crashes involving sleepiness cause more than $12.5
billion in monetary losses each year. 1
- Sleep-related crashes are most common in young
people, who tend to stay up late, sleep too little, and drive at night. In a North Carolina state study, 55% of fall-asleep
crashes involved people 25-years-old or younger. 78% were males.
The peak age of occurrence was 20. 1
- In a recent National Sleep Foundation survey, 27%
of adults reported having dozed off sometime while driving.1
Signs of drowsy driving:
- Yawning
- Closing your eyes (at 60 mph if you close your
eyes only for one second, you've traveled 88 feet!)
- Suddenly jerking the wheel to get back in your
lane
- Missing road signs or exits
- Nodding off
- Having disconnected thoughts

What you can do:
- Get a good night's sleep before the drive and avoid
driving during your body's own "down time." Take breaks
every two hours to nap and stay somewhere overnight, rather than
drive straight through. 1
- Drive with other people. Engaging conversation
may help keep you focused and they might notice when you are too
tired to keep driving. Take turns driving when you start feeling
tired. 1
