Traffic Safety and Impaired Driving Facts

Bicyclists and Pedestrians

  • 687 bicyclists were killed in crashes with motor vehicles in 2000, 71% of whom were over the age of 16 and who usually weren't at fault for their deaths. 1

  • 35% of bicycle deaths occur at intersections. 1

  • In 2002, 4,808 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes, and an additional 71,000 pedestrians were injured. 2

  • Most pedestrian fatalities in 2002 occurred in urban areas (71%), at non-intersection locations (78%), in normal weather conditions (89%), and at night (65%). 2

  • 36% of all pedestrians 16 years and older who were killed in traffic crashes in 2002 were intoxicated. 3

What you can do:

  • If either walking or biking, wear reflective gear so drivers can see you.

  • Be cautious in intersections, making sure to check for people crossing against traffic signals.

  • If someone is intoxicated, find them a sober ride rather than let them walk home.
